Apple and Sausage French Toast Recipe
16 oz bread sliced and cut into triangles
8 large eggs
3 cups milk
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt
6 apples High Meadow Farm apples
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons High Meadow Farm maple syrup
pinch of salt
2 tablespoons melted butter
½ pound High Meadow Farm Breakfast Sausage, crumbled and browned in a skillet
Butter a 9″ x 13”casserole dish. Place the slices of bread into the dish. Beat the eggs, then whisk in the milk, sugar, vanilla, nutmeg and salt. Pour this mixture over the bread, and let it soak in while preparing the topping.
Peel and thinly slice the apples. Toss them with the remaining topping ingredients. Spread the crumbled, cooked sausage over the bread and then spread the apple mixture over that.
Bake at 375°F for 30 to 40 minutes until the apples are soft and the egg mixture is set. Serve with additional maple syrup.
This dish may be prepared ahead of time and refrigerated overnight. It will require a longer baking time to cook if refrigerated, about 60-70 minutes.
